The 2016-2017 Feinberg Family Distinguished Lecture Series will explore the ways that state violence, mass incarceration, and mass criminalization have transformed the U.S. economy, culture and society. More than a dozen panels, performances, gallery exhibitions, and lectures by the nation's leading scholars, artists and activists will explore a wide range of topics, from police brutality, immigration detention, and carceral feminism to the consequences of incarceration for women, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals. The series will culminate in the opening of the national traveling exhibition States of Incarceration: A National Dialogue of Local Stories.

This Feinberg Series aims to offer meaningful events that consider the carceral state in historical perspective and that will support and amplify ongoing work by community groups and activists, enriching undergraduate and graduate education at UMass and surrounding educational institutions. Taken together, these powerful events will explore the many ways in which the carceral state impacts our lives and our world in deep and far-reaching ways.

This is a devastating setback in our fight for justice. But the grand jury's decision does not mean a crime was not committed in Ferguson, Missouri, on August 9. It does not mean we are done fighting for Michael Brown.

Sign our petition to the Department of Justice. Demand resolution to the federal, criminal civil rights investigation into Michael Brown's death.

We are all filled with frustration, disbelief, and anger over this decision. That the officer who shot and killed an unarmed black man with his hands in the air remains free is appalling. Local officials in Ferguson utterly failed in their duties to conduct an open and transparent investigation.

The local prosecutor who oversaw the grand jury process has significant personal, family, and professional ties to the local police department—the same local police who were slow to talk to witnesses and eager to attack protesters and journalists.

We will not allow this to be another Sanford, Florida. We will not allow the justice system to let us down once more. Take action today, for Michael, and for all of our sons.

While the NAACP joins the community in standing for peaceful protest, we will hold law enforcement officials accountable and ask that they adhere to the rules of engagement agreed upon.

We stand united with the community and other activists groups, demanding that all police officers wear operable body cameras; police departments reflect the diversity of the community that they are serving; and that Congress passes the End Racial Profiling Act.
The recent memo from our School Committee chairs denouncing Dr. Shabazz’s recent comments at a meeting of the Equity Task Force comes across as an incitant document. It is an example of what many social justice-anti-racism professional practitioners could describe as an example of white power. This, as we can now witness, can be quite unsettling and feels irresponsible. One of Amherst’s district policies is to not only hire but retain staff of color in our schools. Yet district leaders seem to work against this stated goal. The memo from our S.C. chairs, whether inspired by Dr. Shabazz's critical superintendent evaluation or some other reason, adds to a level of distrust many members of our community already experience when interacting with district leaders.
And, over the years our ARHS students of color and white students have documented such practices. As Amherst students continue their education from elementary to high school our district they will continually be taught nearly all topics and subjects from a [favorable to] Eurocentric perspective. Students will witness their mostly white teachers more harshly disciplining their classmates of color for the same or similar behaviors the same white teacher will ignore in white students. Our district has over a decade of data documenting this behavior on the part of our educators. In this situation students of color are at a definite power imbalance to object to this frequent and consistent discrimination and in fact may be disciplined for objecting. All the while our white students are observing and learning from the examples adults present to them. These behaviors model to future adults who then feel empowered to continue perpetuating habits of race and class bias among next generations. This creates a hostile and unsafe situation for all of our kids.

When white educators continually and persistently demonize students of color, and white students continue to witness their teacher's behavior, our district is creating a hostile and unsafe situation. This is what Dr. Shabazz referred to during the June 18th Equity Task Force meeting. We need district leaders, educators and staff with the competence to practice our mission everyday.

AMHERST — It is heartening to read the letter from Amherst Regional High School Principal Mark Jackson, regarding the response of the ARHS community to the “racist messages” at the school. I am very glad Jackson was able to see beyond the individual and personal implications of the incident, to understand and “accept responsibility at the school level.” I further encourage district level responsibility for this incident. When circumstances in the system reach a point where a member of the staff is “devastated,” it is important that the superintendent of schools and the School Committee demonstrate some level of accountability.

Guaranteeing the “personal safety, dignity and professional success” of an individual staff member is important. Creating a system culture and climate that makes such a guarantee possible and realistic is paramount. In order to make this happen, the principal, the superintendent, and the School Committee must explain to Carolyn Gardner, to other African heritage members of the school system, and indeed to the entire community, why there was a third incident. The system has to take some quite specific actions to secure the confidence of African heritage people in the system that it is capable of guaranteeing their personal safety.

To do so, they must explain what action was taken on those three levels when the first incident occurred back in the fall of 2013. It is possible, and quite likely, that if appropriate and sufficient administrative action had been taken at the district level at the occurrence of the first incident, then the third incident might have been averted. This is a good opportunity for the district, including the superintendent and the School Committee, to examine the efforts of the system to communicate to all members of the system that the district is committed to being a place that works well for everyone.

The district must communicate to everyone its vision of what it means to be a multicultural school system, and what it intends to do to create such a system. Clear and positive goals and expectations for everyone, including students, staff, administrators and School Committee, must be communicated.

This system plan must clarify expectations for behavior, and include clear statements of consequences when an individual fails to meet those standards of behavior. Faculty and staff must have guidelines that help them know what is required of them to create such a system. This plan must include, both a description of what will be done to redress the current situation, as well as long-range goals and strategies to meet those goals.

Only such clarity of expectations will help the district accomplish the goal of being a system that works well for everyone. Such clarity will help everyone in the system, including students, faculty, staff, parents, and the community as well, know that incidents such as the one described by Jackson, will be met with a swift and firm response from the system. Then, all members of the system as well as the community, including Gardner, will know that the system is dedicated to and capable of being a safe, inclusive place for everyone.
